Mang Ont – Maa Sarv (2019) – Stunning Estonian psychedelic doom
There is no more pleasurable sensation than discovering gems in unconventional places. From Tartu in Estonia (!) comes this jewel of heavy metal. Mang Ont, which is news for almost everyone, is already releasing the second album Maa Sarv. Summarizing the sound as Stoner Sludge Doom, despite using 3 subgenres, does not explain all the nuances of this musical experience.
It's only 3 songs and each is a true journey of rhythm, vibration and reverie. Buldolont that opens the album with nearly 19-minute of heaviness is the Doomest of the songs and holds onto the dirty Stone-metal bass. The music is packed in a cyclic rhythm that breaks interspersed by moments of psychedelia and rare dark-distant vocals that pronounce almost like an epilogue. Luumurdja continues in the same developed tonality, but begins to sympathize with the Post-metal without however abandoning the Sludge distortion. Closing up Tundratuul decides to accelerate and send riffs that comes straight from space-rock, but only to converges back to the Psychedelic Doom spirit, without any vocals.
Maa Sarv, the second album from this Estonian trio is stunning. Doom Stone Psychedelic Sludge with post-metal feel and space-rock snippets; describing the sound is a much more complex task than appreciate the sound waves coming from your headphones.
