Warrior Soul - Back on the Lash (2017) – Retro for some, retrograde for others.

Kory Clarke is the guy behind the Warrior Soul, and despite the stable line-up since 2008 the new album took 5 years to come out - Back on the Lash. Although it was released in 2017 the themes remain strictly the same as in the 80's - party, women, drugs and booze.

Hard rock festive with rebellious spirit, "Back on The Lash" doesn´t add anything new to the hard rock broth. The sound is well done, Kory's husky vocals combine with the style that rises in weight to get a heavy metal flavor, but the theme is old (dull) and the performance straight. Let's agree that creating an intro proclaiming "Detroit ... I am an American Idol," sounds pedantic, cliche, and worst deceiver. I Get Fucked Up has even a reminiscence of AC / DC, with the contagious cyclical melody, but that soon enough becomes repetitive. Heavy metal influence can be heard on songs like Back on the Lash and Thrill Seeker. The album has its best moments when lean towards the unpretentious Glam Rock. Going Broke Getting High with its pulsing cadence and its infectious chorus would go to the top of the charts 30 years ago. That's How We Roll that closes the album sends its most incisive message to the critics (are they talking to me?). Made to be played live for a nostalgic audience that will rumble "Hey, hey, hey, That's how we roll"

For the passionate eighties-lovers, Warrior Soul is the DeLorean to return to the festive 80's, for the novice original-sounds-seekers, is the C4 Corvette which has no ability to travel back in time but by the mind. Perhaps sucking from the original source (Motley Crue, Kiss, Ratt and whole bunch well-known bands) or even the modern Steel Panther might be a more pleasurable option. Yet the sound is fun, well executed and vitamin boost for the memory, it helps to prevent Alzheimer.
