Stay Asleep – Mourner (2018) – When crust punk goes crushing bones
Another release to get into the best of the year list (so far). "Mourner" is the debut of the Chicago trio Stay Asleep, Basically the sound is the mix of Doom obscurity, Hardcore speed, Sludge filth and Punk revolt. This amalgam is aka Crust Punk.
Although there are 12 songs to go, the fleeting experience lasts only 31 minutes of many hoarse vocals, bass burst and incisive riffs. To open the album reverberating a noise distortion metal riff under an obscure doom aura that deflagrates into a frenzied hardcore rhythm exposes in Decision Rule song the qualities of Stay Asleep. With no time to breathe, we are already shifting to the shorter and more cantankerous track Career Path. In this mind-boggling rhythm the experience of being trampled gets deeper in each songs that comes resonating in the guts. The bass strength descending to almost prohibitive tones can be appreciated in tracks like Quality Metric, Surveyed Response, Driller. Metal language comes to light through the untimely riffs of Misanthrope and Obtunded and through the cyclic doom of Nameless and Amnestic. It is curious to note that such a spontaneous intense sound borders the math metal by using some elaborate polyrhythms.
It is admirable the human body's ability to receive the powerful vibrations of this type of music without the collapsed ear ossicles. Stay Asleep begins his career in the disputed world of heavy music with an incisive album that patents the opulence of Chicago's underground. Now we can only hope that they will keep in this right track, the heavy-crust punk music fans are always in need of bands like that.
