Slaughter to Prevail - Misery Sermon (2017) - Avant-garde deathcore under a black metal influence
"Misery Sermon" is the second album from the Russian quintet Slaughter to Prevail. Released in 2018, features a dreadful dark deathcore sound. More death than core Slaughter to Prevail follows the formula of the genre with aggressiveness, changes of tempo, double vocals that ranges from sharp screams to profound howls, innovated under a more modern and moderate melody. The fact of being bilingual (English-Russian) is just a detail that will go unnoticed by most of the listeners.
The album opens with Misery Sermon exposing the machine-gun drums type of beat that creates the sense of urgency characteristic of the style. The pace alternates in tempo ranging from ultrasonic speeds to cadence groove suitable for headbanging, hear Chronic Slaughter to feel what I mean. The vocal on Failed Hope excels when it unties the fastest lines and invests in regretful death crys. Below is the instrumental touch that still maintains aggressiveness, but under a new-metal approach. The highlight of th album is King which has a hardcore instability with oscillating passages, obscure mood and fleeting laden tension. Black metal is subliminally felt through the whole album mainly in the lyrics themes.
Slaughter to Prevail crops up from the clutter of obscure bands with an honest sound under a reasonable production on avant-garde deathcore posture. "To survive We must suffer Live in fear," sums up the feelings enjoyed in the listening experience of "Misery Sermon" that perches under a perverse black metal influence.
