Betraying the Martyrs - The Resilient (2017)

The Resilient is the third album by the french band Betraying the Martyrs. Deathcore with a strong post-hardcore influence. The album has been attending some of the year's best lists in major specialist publications, and, by the way, deservedly.

The album is divided into 12 tracks and opens with Lost For Words under strong death metal influence in a salient production that accentuates the post-hardcore chorus. The great duality of "The Resilient" lies precisely in the strong compositions loaded with death metal weight and Core-style speed that dwindle in the post-hardcore melodic chorus. These corny slides, very prevalent in metalcore, have already begun their invasion as a weed in deathcore. Despite these minors downfalls, Betraying the Martyrs is very competent when plays heavy. Highlight for tracks like Unregistered that has a well notable thrash metal footprint, Won't Back Down  that is stuffed with an atmospheric piano that creates a surprisingly black metal mood, (Dis) Connected that starts insanely death, the grooved Behind the Glass and Wide Awake with industrial touches.

"The Resilient" is deathcore very well produced, heavy, contagious, but that sins when it invests in melody in the refrains. This mildness has a pretentious purpose to make music softer for the sensitive ear. By staying on hesitation divides opinions among those who prefer thunderous death music and those who prefer the contained radio music. Quality Betraying the Martyrs has already proven it has, in my opinion, just lacked a little more courage.
